Flextalk Webinar: The Many Layers of Flexibility

What:  The many layers of flexibility
When: 18th July 2024
Where: Webinar (online)
Time:  11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Join EEA and Cortexo for the upcoming Flextalk webinar on 18th July 2024, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

This session will provide a real-time demonstration of the ‘FlexSplice Hub’ by FlexViz, showcasing how data visibility using real-time graphs and interactive visuals can address system constraints. The webinar will also offer updates on EEA's ongoing activities and the FlexTalk programme.

What we like the most about this session is it shares learning-by-doing which will help to deliver two steps (at least) in Flexibility Plan 1.0; #28 Explore the delivery of a register of flexibility resources and #32 Identify simple approaches to signal opportunities to supply flexibility to users.

Sidenote and a bit of self-promotion…. this is where the real value of the Flexibility Plan shines through. By providing a coherent and structured list of steps and actions focused on a specific, albeit, BIG outcome, the Flexibility Plan helps us all to know whether the hard work going on is well targeted and takes things closer to a point where households, businesses and communities can easily make choices about and realise the full benefits of their flexibility.

FlexForum Insights: Maximising the Value of Flexibility

Maximising the value of flexibility relies on making that value easily and routinely available to households, businesses, and communities.

Our latest Insights highlight how we can help future-proof our electricity system by paying households and businesses for their flexibility.

Flexibility might be up there with the best things in life for a resilient and affordable electricity system, but it certainly isn’t free. We need to make rewarding the households and businesses for the services they provide with their flexibility the norm.

This is how the dinner table conversation will change by making it easy and obvious that investment in a heat pump, solar, batteries, an EV or any electric device that can have its operation coordinated could create financial reward for beyond the fuel or power bill. ?

We aren’t there yet, but we think some key changes to the rules and rewards will help flexibility owners to be easily and fairly rewarded for what they are bringing to the table.

The breadth of membership and experience of FlexForum Members, and by the power of Greyskull, mean we are uniquely placed to work together, with government and regulators, to make these key changes happen faster to fill the hole in the value bucket.

FlexForum Advice to the Commerce Commission

FlexForum provided its view to the Commerce Commission on how to ensure the most reliable and affordable distribution services possible, making it easier for households, businesses, and communities to electrify and maximise the value of their flexibility.

We believe the proposed arrangements will encourage incremental productivity improvements but need more robust encouragement of ambitious learning-by-doing to make the transformational change necessary to integrate flexible resources. This change is essential for delivering a reliable and affordable distribution service as the economy electrifies.

More flexibility, faster, will give distributors a lower-cost way to provide the distribution service and give households, businesses, and communities more ‘flexible’ options to reduce their use of the network and individual electricity bills.

This way, everyone’s a winner, baby, that’s the truth…

We are getting stuck into the 2024 workplan. Here is an update on where things are at with the initial 7 tasks we are working on.
Task Currently working on…
A plausible future state for distributed flexibility
This task has taken a back seat while we focused on finding the holes in the value bucket, the EV charging workplan and checking on progress with delivering the Flexibility Plan.
But, each of these tasks reinforced the importance of the two insights from our work so far: hole
  • how it will be super important for people to have access to information and advice to make decisions about electricity and flexibility.
  • the critical role that electricians, the building and construction sector, manufacturers (of potentially flexible equipment), big box stores (who sell the equipment), electrical inspectors and installers will play in helping people make decisions about flexibility
The many ways a household, business or community can benefit from distributed flexibility Still putting the finishing touches on a description of the outcomes that people can get using flexibility, the menu of actions, and most importantly, current day experience.
Designing a smart EV charging workplan  We shared a proposed set of actions with the people who joined the conversation and FlexForum Members just last week. A final plan will be sent to eeca by 31 July 2024.
Safe to say that the actions may seem familiar to keen readers of the Flexibility Plan and this newsletter…they include filling the holes in the value bucket and giving people better information and advice to make decisions about flexibility.
Maximising the value of flexibility relies on making that value easily and routinely available… (or A stocktake of the existing flexible resources, their opportunities and beneficiaries) This is done. Check it out here

Set the scene for digitalising the electricity ecosystem We have a list of the data and data flows that will probably be needed to enable the future electricity system and market and are turning this into another FlexForum Insights, which hopefully you will get to see in August.
Track progress with delivering the FlexForum Flexibility Plan 1.0 for the electricity ecosystem Members have given their views and we are documenting it now… stay tuned.
Update the Flexibility Plan This task will start once we understand the state of progress.
We have found some new tasks and new ways of expressing existing tasks….

FlexForum Members want to make it easier for households, businesses and communities to maximise the value of their energy resources and their flexibility. This flexibility will help deliver an affordable and reliable operation of the electricity system and enable accelerated electrification as part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s transition to a zero emissions economy.
