A Christmas message from Toby, our independent chair

I have been independent chair of FlexForum for nearly 4 months and have met with many FlexForum members, observers and friends.

My reflection is that we have the right people at the right time. FlexForum has established itself as representing a wide range of organisations seeking to contribute to a place that supports coordinated and collaborative action to make it easier for households, businesses and communities to maximise the value of consumer and distributed energy resources and flexibility.

After the events of 2024 it is clear that this is the time to walk the talk. There has never been a better time to harness every resource we have so households, businesses and communities can experience the tangible benefits of a lowest cost, highly reliable and resilient and sustainable electricity supply.

I hope everyone gets a break over Christmas and I look forward to working with you all in 2025.

You can read a bit more here about what I have found and think are the flex prospects for 2025.

Making it easier for people to make flexible choices

Flexibility is not just about avoiding billions in infrastructure costs. It's actually mostly about enabling people to make choices that align with the cost, reliability and sustainability outcomes they want.

Consider the potential savings from switching to electric appliances and vehicles highlighted in Rewiring Aotearoa’s Electric Homes report. This shows what informed and supported people can achieve.

This year, we've seen progress with more market offers that encourage flexible decision-making, but we must continue to simplify these choices. Providing tools and information that empower people is crucial for harnessing the full potential of flexible energy resources.

The mission of the FlexForum is to make it easy for people to get value from their flexibility, so we need to keep progressing things from the market point of view and the human point of view.

Advice to the Electricity Authority on its 2025-26 levy and workplan proposals

We provided advice to the Electricity Authority last week on its 2025-26 levy and workplan proposals. The Authority has a big role in setting the pace of change to ensure people have choices in accessing the energy they need now, and in the future, to ensure they and Aotearoa New Zealand prosper’.

Increasing the Authority appropriation for 2025-26 would accelerate upgrading regulatory settings, if the funds are efficiently spent on the right things.

Maybe we are biased, but we think it would be great if the Authority had a whole-of-system, forward looking and living checklist (just like the Flexibility Plan) of the learning needed and practical actions to be implemented over the next 10 years or so to deliver its vision.

We reckon the checklist will pay for itself in no time by enabling a rigorous and structured approach which avoids thought bubbles, pet projects and vested interests from distracting effort and attention from stuff that will make a tangible different to people.

For 2025-26 we think a workplan focused on enabling people to have choices, including about flexibility, would explicitly include and prioritise tasks to fill the holes in the value stack and make it easier for people to discover and assess their flexibility and electricity choices.

Prioritising these will bring more of the latent flexibility of households, businesses and communities online to help address the electricity scarcity problems anticipated for winters 2025 and 2026 and complement efforts to strengthen transmission and distribution network resilience.

The advice is here.

Just do it…. What we said to MBIE on proposed voltage range for distribution networks

We provided advice to MBIE to just do it and make the proposed changes to the permitted voltage range for distribution networks.

The advice is here.

2024 is nearly done. This is what FlexForum Members did in the year…

  • The first AGM on 22 August
  • 1 Flex Day on 17 October. 50 people from 35 organisations and groups.
  • progress report.
  • FlexForum Insights.
  • pieces of advice to the Electricity Authority, Commerce Commission and MBIE.
  • 11 newsletters and 6 articles. The most popular article was Introducing FlexForum.
  • 56 LinkedIn posts. The best comment was… "Oh FlexForum magic 8 ball, what shall I spend my solar generation revenue on? *shake-a-shake-a-shake-a*
  • More than 10 workshops to chew on gnarly questions and topics.

18 new Members! Ending the year with 40 Members from across the ecosystem and a few real people.

There were big steps in 2024 towards a flexible electricity system and market, but 2025 is going to see even more action and more progress.

Quoting the independent chair, FlexForum is the right people at the right time.

Things FlexForum is working on

FlexForum is doing stuff in three areas.

A Deep dive on filling the holes in the value stack. This will result in advice to the Electricity Authority and a FlexForum Insights. Our thinking to date is here and here.
Looking ahead to 2025, we will see about diving into the always fraught and not well understood area that is data and digitalisation. maybe the crocodiles and piranhas will be in a different pool?
Flexibility Plan 2.0. We are updating the to-do list. This time it will include sequencing and timeframes for action to better hold the ecosystem accountable for progress.
Right now, Members are thinking about the business case questions to use flexibility to minimise electricity costs, minimise connection costs, monetise flexibility, manage reliability and resilience and reduce emissions.
Supporting learning-by-doing. FlexForum Members really want to see stuff happen, and do things to make that stuff happen, particularly if that stuff involves delivering the Flexibility Plan and results in flexibility providing tangible benefits to humans.
We are working on turning the Flex Day ideas into as much practical action as possible. We will have more to say about this in 2025.

Want to get involved?

FlexForum Members want to make it easier for households, businesses and communities to maximise the value of their energy resources and their flexibility. This flexibility will help deliver an affordable and reliable operation of the electricity system and enable accelerated electrification as part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s transition to a zero emissions economy.
